Fans’ safety at Nakuru KCB competition worry rally stars

By John Lawrence

As Nairobian rally lovers cruise to Nakuru for the weekend for the fourth round of the national rally championships, the organisers of the sporting event and rally drivers are keen on the safety of the spectators.

Rally fans have previously been involved in dreadful road accidents due to drunkenness or speeding.

The only indigenous Kenyan crew John Ng’ang’a and George Njoroge have called on fans and other road users to observe sanity and obey traffic rules.

“We are educating them about the risks involved, and we hope that most of them will observe safety,” said Nganga

Nga’anga and Njoroge finished at tenth position during the first leg in Kajiado and ninth in the Nyeri outing.

They will be using the Nakuru tourney as a build up for the July Safari Rally, which is also the biggest race in the Kenya Rally calendar.

With drivers trying to widen the gap between one another and some coming up with different motives, the Nakuru event will offer another interesting battle for the drivers as series leader Baldev Chager will face off second-placed rally veterans Ian Duncan and defending champion Carl Tundo who have 140 points. The drivers will be applying different strategies in the event to beat the stiff competition that has been witnessed since the start of the 2013 rally series.

Air Leasing Services Ltd will enhance the safety during the running of the all the KNRC competitions in the current season through the provision of a safety and evacuation helicopter.

Women crews have warned participants against underrating them as they also renew their rivalry in the Great Rift Valley.

The rally starts at the Nakuru Industrial Area with Gicheha farm providing the 26km competitive section one.
