How to dress for a semi-formal event

By Rozie Juma

There are times when one is invited to an event with a specified dress code. This often confuses many people because they do not know what to wear. One of the most misunderstood dress codes is ‘semi-formal’.

So, what is expected of you when you are asked to come in semi-formal attire? This dressing is a step lower than formal, that is a black-tie event, but not as casual as a cocktail.

When invited to a semi-formal event, remember the following:

• The semi-formal dress code is common at weddings, award ceremonies and movies if they take place during the daytime. If the same events take place at night, then one would be expected to dress in more formal attire.

• Traditionally, a semi-formal look for men during the day consists of a jacket, trousers, vest and tie. The only men allowed to wear a tuxedo during the day are groomsmen, if the event is a wedding. Go for light-coloured suits and ties to fit in with the style. Evening events, however, call for dark suits at the very least.

As fashion trends change, it is becoming less necessary to wear a tie to a semi-formal event. However, note that linen suits are too casual for semi-formal attire.

• Women can opt for dresses that fall below or just on the knee. Trouser suits and dress suits, too, can be suitable and stylish. Go for fabrics such as taffeta, chiffon, velvet and satin. A dress suit in silk or brocade will result in a stunning look for your semi-casual event.

• The dress lengths appropriate for semi-formal attire vary. Cocktail dresses should be no more than an inch above the knee. Dress suits should have a hem slightly above, at, or below the knee. Trouser suits should be ankle-length.

• Heels in colours coordinating with the outfit are a good choice for women. Casual flats or strappy sandals with an appropriate outfit could also do for semi-formal attire. Flip-flops and loafers are a no no when it comes to semi-formal attire.

Now, next time you are invited to a semi-formal event, you surely will stand out.
