World Indoor champion Caleb Ndiku Mwangangi will join two-time world champion Asbel Kiprop when attempting the world record at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Monaco next July.

Mwangangi, who is also the Africa 1,500m champion, made his intentions clear when he won 10,000m final at the Athletics Kenya track and field meeting at Nyayo National Stadium yesterday.

The lanky athlete tore through the field to win in 28:28.4, ahead of John Elimlin (29:03.0) and Geoffrey Kipkorir (29:05.8).

“My body has low endurance and that’s why I competed in 10,000m and not 1,500m. I will run in 1,500m in Monaco, where Kiprop intents to break the world record.

“I can’t say that I will break the world record but the last 100 metres will be our decider. I am a world beater and fear no one. I will try to run a sub 3:28 in Hengelo first and gauge my form. I want to defend my Africa title too in Morocco.”

But former world 1,500m silver medalist Silas Kiplagat, who was fresh from finishing second behind Kiprop in Doha, said he would not rule out a possibility of world record attempt.

“We are very strong now. I may not break the world record but I am certain it’s attainable. Let us not cross the river before we get there,” said Kiplagat.

Elijah Manangoi won 1,500m in 3:40.3 ahead of Stanley Kipkemboi (3:40.4) and Katui Mwea (3:40.4).

Africa Junior 5,000m champion Moses Mukono (13:50.4) won his speciality, outwitting Silas Kimutai (13:51.4) and Peter Njoroge (13:58.3).

Nancy Nziza won women’s 5,000m in 17:31.7 ahead of Monicah Wanjohi (17:37.6) and Mary Wangechi (17:40.0).

Meanwhile IAAF has accepted Kenya’s 4x400m relay team to the inaugural IAAF World Relay Championships set for Nassau, Bahamas, later this month.

IAAF, however, turned down the women’s application. Athletics Kenya had inquired if they can be allowed to enter a 4x400m women’s team.

Only 19 men’s teams out of 24 have qualified for Bahamas and the Kenyans  had clocked 3:05.36 just a second shy off the required time of 3:04.10.
