Chepkoech crushes championships mark to win gold

Africa Cross Country Championships gold medallist Caroline Chepkoech was in a class of her own as she crushed the previous Africa Junior Championships mark by 26 seconds to finish first in a personal best time of 15:24.66 at Gaborone, Botswana on Sunday.

Her compatriot Janet Kisa only lost to Chepkoech in the final sprint to settle for silver medal in a personal best time of 15:24.75. Kisa was the winner of the this year’s National Junior Cross Country title in March.

The bronze medal went to, Ethiopia’s Genet Ayalew in a season’s best time of 15:27.96. Ayalew won silver medal at the World Cross Country Championships junior race in Punta Umbria, Spain and her compatriot Emebet Anteneh, a 3,000m silver medallist at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada was fourth in a time of 15:34.92.

Nigeria won the men’s 4x100m relay in 40.98 with the women’s title going to South Africa in 46.11. South African Rocco van Rooyen took the men’s javelin title in fine 75.72m personal best — he was sixth last year in Moncton at the World Junior Championships.

Mohammad Basan Mousaad won the women’s High Jump with a 1.81m clearance breaking both Egyptian senior and junior records. Countrywoman Rana Ahmad Taha retained her African Junior title won in 2009 winning with a 59.94m throw in the Hammer Throw.

Organisers of the event praised the championships as the best in the history of the competition in terms of the level of results in middle and long distance running.

Winners at the championships are expected to feature at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France between July 6 and 10.
