Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has come out to clarify that it is not responsible for the tragic Karai, Naivasha accident.

According to witness reports, the lorry transporting highly flammable chemicals lost control after hitting a bump and ramming into several cars before bursting into flames.

This comes after President Uhuru blamed the highway authorities for carelessly erecting unmarked speed bumps on highways.

"This is to confirm that bumps at Karai accident scene were marked and signage in existence thus not the cause of accident as alleged," KeNHA said in a statement.

They also added that the bumps were erected in January this year as a result of community demands, with the involvement of the community and NTSA.

The agency put the blame squarely on careless driving. According to KeNHA, the bumps were clearly marked and there were rumble strips preceding the bumps.

While urging all drivers to adhere to road safety regulations, they also called on communities to stop the erection of illegal bumps and encroachment of road reserves.

The statement ended with a message of condolence and support to those affected.

Death toll from the accident has hit 41 with many more still hospitalised.
