KENYA BAGS EA TITLE: Hosts emerge golf winners at Inter-parliamentary games in Mombasa

Kenya’s parliamentary golf team won gold on the final day of this year’s East Africa Inter-parliamentary games in Mombasa.

It was handicap 6 Kiragu Chege and handicap 18 Yusufu Chanzu’s best combined score of 55 stableford points that assured Kenya of victory.

Both returned 28 and 27 points during the golf tournament at par 71 Nyali golf and Country Club.

This was Kenya’s second successive victory. They won in last year’s event in Rwanda.

Rivals Uganda finished second after handicap 10 Ivan Koreta posted 29 points and teammate handicap 8 Evalyne Asiimwe (23 points) brought a combined score of 52 points.

The EALA team that had Peter Mathuki (captain), who had the day’s individual best score of 32 points, Dan Kadega, Sara Bonaya and Susan Nakawuki combined for 46 points to settle for the Bronze medal.

Mathuki said he was impressed with this year’s turnout, adding that the sport is improving and they hope to have more players in next year’s event.

He urged other East Africa countries to participate in future events.

“Through their participation, sports will help in the promotion of friendship among the East African countries,” said Mathuki.

Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi did not field teams in the event.

Teams also competed in volleyball, football, Tug of war, athletics and netball.

The week-long sporting extravaganza was hosted by the Kenyan Parliament. Other sponsors included Mombasa County Government, AON, Sarova Hotels, Kenya Ports Authority and Co-operative Bank.

Meanwhile, handicap 16 Michael Karuga, who had a countback score of 40 points, won the 2016 Githunguri event in Kiambu.

He tied on points with handicap 24 Nahashon Mburi, who was the Men Winner.

Grace Kibe, playing off handicap 23, was the Lady Winner on 35 points. Handicap 5 Joyce Wanjiru was second with a one-point difference.

Handicap 3 Michael Ngene won the gross title on 78 points, while handicap 13 Joseph Birir, who had 40 points, was the guest winner.
