Whyvonne Isuza scored the lone goal as Mathare United temporarily leapfrogged Tusker to top spot after a 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars, at the Nyayo National Stadium, yesterday.

In Kisumu AFC Leopards could not find a way past bogey side Chemelil as they fell to a Hillary Echesa goal in a 1-0 defeat.

Tusker take on Posta Rangers in Machakos today as champions Gor Mahia travel to Thika United.

Mathare could have taken an early lead in the seventh minute, but Isuza fluffed his shot after good delivery from Chrispin Oduor.

However, three minutes later, the former Kakamega High and Nairobi Stima midfielder pounced on Edward Seda’s incisive cross on the box to broke the deadlock, beating goalkeeper James Saruni to take Mathare’s points tally to 30.

Moments later, newly recruited Mathare custodian Wycliffe Kasaya was forced to come off his line to deny Cliff Kasuti.

In the 17th minute, Obadiah Ndege forced a fine save from Ulinzi shot stopper Saruni before Samuel Onyango blasted wide from close range. Ulinzi then came close twice but lanky striker Oscar Wamalwa’s glancing header missed target by inches before Benson Sande hit the post in the 35th minute.

After the breather, Oliver Kiprutto had a chance to draw level but the defender’s close range header went wide before John Makwatta found the back of the net, but the flag had already gone up for offside.

In an earlier match at the same venue, Rodgers Ochieng and Kennedy Oduor scored a goal each to propel Ushuru to a hard fought 2-1 win over visiting Sony Sugar.

The Millers pulled a goal back through Amos Asembeka’s spot kick on the stroke of halftime after Masuod Juma had been tripped in the box by goalkeeper Shaban Odhoji.

However, the former Nakuru AllStars custodian made amends in the injury time saving Victor Ademba’s penalty kick.

In Kisumu, Echesa’s 49th minute goal is all that Chemelil Sugar needed to beat a wasteful AFC Leopards at the Moi Stadium.

The veteran midfielder volleyed home Morrise Wandera’s cross from the right flank just four minutes into the second half.

AFC started the brighter side and could have gone ahead in the sixth minute but Andrew Tololwa squandered the chance.

Elsewhere, a last-gasp Olivier Maloba goal helped Nairobi City Stars earn a precious 1-1 draw with visiting Muhoroni Youth, at the Kasarani Stadium.
