Newly posted Kericho Deputy County Criminal Investigation officer Charles Mugambi was shot dead Thursday.

Mr Mugambi was allegedly killed by two junior officers in Palaat at the border of Kisumu and Kericho.

The navy-blue Subaru Outback in which Mugambi and two of his colleagues were riding in had at least six bullet holes. Five of the bullets passed through the driver's door while one of the bullets blew off the roof of the vehicle.

Mugambi was transferred to Kericho from Kinangop three months ago. Mugambi is said to have been driving the vehicle at the time of his death, as a pool of drying blood was found on the seat.

The vehicle's right hind wheel was deflated and the front bumper damaged.

Kericho County Police Commander Adiel Nyange said the trio were on official duty patrolling the Kericho–Kisumu highway at the time of the shooting.

"We received a call from the public that there had been a shoot-out at the scene and dispatched a team to investigate the matter and they found the senior officer bleeding from gun wounds and was rushed to Kericho Siloam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," said Mr Nyange.

Two officers have since been arrested over the killing.

The Thursday morning incident is the first ever reported shooting incident among members of the police force in the county.

"Investigations are undergoing to establish the real cause of the incident. As of now we cannot pre-empt the investigations until the whole picture emerges," said Nyange.

The two officers' guns were taken to ballistics experts "to determine the actual murder weapon and its owner".

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old man was killed in a road accident in Homa Bay Thursday.

Michael Odhiambo was knocked by a speeding motorist along the Homa Bay-Kendu Bay town highway in Rachuonyo North Sub-County while trying to cross the road. Area OCPD Joseph Kisombe said Mr Odhiambo was crossing at a corner.

"The driver and Odhiambo flouted the law by failing to observe traffic rules while approaching the corner," he added.
