A new twist has emerged in the Kisii-Nyamira counties boundary row, with the two governors accusing each other of invasion and encroachment.

This comes after the two governors, John Nyagarama (Nyamira) and James Ongwae (Kisii), last week met in efforts to resolve the Keroka town conflict.

Mr Nyagarama over the weekend accused Kisii County of occupying strategic areas belonging to his administration.

The Kisii Bottlers plant, the Kenya Farmers Training Centre, Kisii National Polytechnic and a huge chunk of Jogoo residential estates are some of the key areas Nyagarama said he would  claim through arbitration procedures.

“I want to set the record straight here that there are so many issues about our boundary with Kisii County. And now that they want a share of Keroka, I want the national government to come out very clearly and show us where our beacons are and all the institutions that were grabbed from us must be given back,” he said when he addressed the public at Sironga Girls High School.

HISTORICAL INJUSTICES

Nyagarama said he was addressing “historical injustices” that have been constantly perpetrated by the defunct Kisii County Council and now, the County Government of Kisii.

He said his Kisii counterpart was being unfair by continually insisting on having a hand in the management of Keroka town, something he said was not out of good will.

He said he will move to claim features he believes belongs to Nyamira but are deemed to be in Kisii.

Last week, the two governors held a meeting in Kisumu to resolve the boundary dispute and agreed to form a stakeholders’ meeting to address the matters.

The raging disagreement over boundaries between the two devolved units started with Keroka town, which is being claimed by both counties.

The town is said to be the highest revenue generator for Nyamira, and the county is not keen to let it go.

Intermittent chaos between revenue collectors, traders and residents have been witnessed in the area over the last three years.
