Olympic champions Eliud Kipchoge and Vivian Cheruiyot are this year’s Athletes of the Year.

Kipchoge, who won marathon gold at the Rio Olympics, beat two other Olympic champions to be named the Male Athlete of the Year during an Athletics Kenya gala held yesterday at Panari Hotel.

On the other hand Vivian (pictured) also faced a tough battle against two other Rio gold medallists before bagging the Female Athlete of the Year award.

Conseslus Kipruto, who won gold in the 3,000m steeplechase in Rio with an Olympic record, finished second behind Kipchoge with 800m world record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha ranked third.

London marathon champion Jemimah Sumgong, who also became Kenya’s first woman to win an Olympic marathon gold, could not beat Vivian in the race for the Female Athlete of the Year, despite her achievements this year.
