7s players to sign contracts before Olympic qualifier

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Richard Omwela says all the Kenya Sevens players will be contracted.

He said this will be done ahead of the African Olympic Qualifiers in November and the World Sevens Series in December.

This comes barely a year after most senior players snubbed the first three legs of the 2014/15 season due to contractual issues, forcing former coach Paul Treu to field a less experienced side.

But to avoid a repeat of last year’s embarrassing incidences, Omwela said the yet to be known players will be given contracts after consultation with their official sponsors Kenya Airways, who have assured their commitment to support the team.

“Contract issue is a thing of the past and with the Safari 7s now over, it is time to decide on the number of players we actually need,” Omwela told journalists.

“I have talked to KQ CEO about them supporting the team in future and that is why we want the contracts signed up with all the players that will be participating in the series.”

SHORT TIME

The official went ahead to give updates on the CBA sponsorship deal.

“Apparently, CBA have said they will not be able to come on board as they believe the time is too short for them to do that. But I am happy because KQ has confirmed that they are able to handle the team successfully,” said Omwela.

Asked about the future of the newly appointed Kenya Sevens head coach Benjamin Ayimba who replaced Felix Ochieng’, Omwela said; “Of course some directors were not happy with his appointment but we all agreed to assess him after the Safari 7s. It is not about the certificates but delivery.

“Ayimba has done it before without those certificates did we ask him? “As far as I am concerned, he is the right man for the job and it will be good if we put our differences aside and give him all the support he deserves,” added Omwela.
