Spain maintains unbeaten run in Men's Handball World Championships

Two time world champions and three-time Olympic bronze medalists, Spain beat Chile 37-16 to top Group A unbeaten with six points in their third match of the  Men;s Handball World Championships at Duhail Sports Arena, Doha, Qatar Monday evening.

The hosts, Qatar, who are also the 2013 Asian gold medalists, continued with a smooth run, earning their third victory after beating Slovenia 31-29 to occupy the second spot in Group A.

Despite their defeat, Slovenia, who have four points, have qualified for the eighth place final. Spain and Egypt will meet today today to determine who takes the top spot in Group B.

Brazil finally defeated Belarus in the crucial duel for the fourth spot of Group A.

Spain did not expect any serious trouble from Chile whom they beat 37-16.

Even though Spain's advantage was not higher than three goals until the 20th minute of the first half, the rhythm of the game dropped significantly in the second half and it looked like Chile were only keen to keep the goals difference to single figures.

Valero Rivera emerged Spain's top scorer with seven goals, while Guillermo Arraya and Javier Frelijj were the joint top scorers for Chile with three goals apiece.

Despite the defeat Slovenia, who have four points, have clinched a knock-out stage berth, having beaten Belarus and Chile in their earlier encounters.

Hosts Qatar rallied to a dramatic 31-29 victory against Slovenia, a feat which saw their players jump in joy as this was their third straight victory.

In Group B, Croatia and FYRO Macedonia, who both have three wins, will fight for the top spot in the next round today. Austria settled for a crucial 25-25 tie against Tunisia in the group.
