Kenya Rugby Union relishes continental championship success in Machakos

With the final whistle of the  Confederation of African Rugby Women’s Africa Cup Sevens blown, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) are proud to have successfully hosted the event.

The one-day continental tourney held at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos County brought together eight teams led by hosts Kenya,  South Africa,  Uganda, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Madagascar.

Despite the low attendance,  KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee described the contest  as extra-ordinary and thanked Machakos County for its hospitality.

“We’ve succeeded considering the fact that we had only two months to prepare. It’s been a very competitive championship and all the teams have played top class game. The quality of women game has really improved,” Muthee told FeverPitch.

Jcam Luc Barthes, IRB Regional Development Manager said, “I am impressed with the organisation and standards of the game –– it means the future of CAR is bright.”

 His sentiments were echoed by Susan Carty, IRB Women’s Development Manager, who said: “ The event was organised in a very professional manner demonstrating KRU commitment in developing the game. It’s been a very tough contest.”

However, KTN’s sports journalist Moses Wakhisi challenged KRU to up their game. “In an event of this caliber, they would have done much better especially in wooing many fans to the field. Being their first time to host such an event, it’s a plus for the Union,” said Wakhisi.
