Wilshere: Arsenal must sign Rooney

Jack Wilshere has urged Arsenal to sign Wayne Rooney — claiming he would win them the title and put “fear” into their rivals.

Rooney meets new Manchester United boss David Moyes this week to thrash out his future with Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain all waiting in the wings.

Arsenal last night made their first signing when France Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo arrived from Auxerre on a free.

And Wilshere wants his England team-mate to join him at the Emirates because “he is the type of player who can win you trophies”.

The Gunners midfield ace said: “If it happens, it would be amazing.

“Just to see his name in the team brings fear to the opposition. We could do with more of that.”

Alex Ferguson claimed Rooney asked to leave United at the end of last season. But it remains to be seen how the situation will develop now his former Everton chief Moyes is in charge.

Sanogo, 20, has penned a long-term deal with Arsenal and boss Arsene Wenger said: “He’s a good signing. He has shown he has potential with his recent performances for Auxerre and also for the France Under-20 side.”

Wenger, who has a £75m transfer fund, has also been linked with Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

Both of these players, like Rooney, would command big wages. But Wilshere believes the calibre of names on Arsenal’s radar shows they mean business.

He said: “You look at the type of players like Higuain we’re trying to sign and you have to be encouraged. We need a few more.”
