Former WWE star Alberto Del Rio has been arrested over an alleged sexual assault, according to reports in the U.S.

The 42-year-old - real name Jose Alberto Rodriguez Chucuan - is said to be accused of also beating a woman in San Antonio, Texas on May 3.

According to News 4 and TMZ, the Mexican-American wrestler is facing a sexual assault charge and was arrested on May 9.

He is said to be accused of assaulting the woman, who reportedly handed pictures of multiple injuries she had sustained to police, more than once.

TMZ report that documents also allege Chucuan threatened he would "take her son and drop him in the middle of the road somewhere".

The woman is said to allege that while she was reporting him to cops, he slapped her across the head and asked what she was doing.

Chucuan is also said to have then slapped across the head for a second time.

She also accuses him of forcing her to put on a dress and dance for him, which caused her to start crying.

Chucuan - who was once engaged to British WWE great Paige during a stormy relationship - is said to remain in custody.

In his initial run with Vince McMahon's company, Chucuan was a huge hit, winning four world titles and the US title.

He also triumphed in Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank ladder matches, but left the promotion in 2016.

Chucuan was understood to have been in talks about a third and final return to the WWE back in March.

He has since been working with Hispanic mixed martial arts sports franchise Combate Americas.

The veteran most recently fought against Tito Ortiz on a Combate Americas card back in December. He lost via first round submission.
