Report coming on Olympics performance

BY GILBERT WANDERA AND ERICK OCHIENG’

Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba has promised that Kenyans would know ‘the truth’ about the performance in the London Olympic Games.

Namwamba has promised that a report detailing what happened in London would be ready soon and would be made public.

“Expectations among Kenyans was too high prior to the Games. Most people expected Kenya to win nine or ten gold medals and were disappointed when it did not happen.

“Apart from David Rudisha breaking the world record in 800m, there was nothing spectacular about the team’s performance and Kenyans deserve to know what happened.

“I will ensure that the report comes us out when Parliament resumes. I am determined to get to the bottom of the matter so that we can fix the problem once and for all,” he said.

Namwamba wondered how the same athletes who did not do well in London went on to win events that came after the Olympic Games.

Namwamba is the second high ranking Government official to express disappointment over the London Olympics performance.

In August, President Kibaki  directed the Ministry of Sports to establish the cause of the dismal performance of Team Kenya at the Olympics.

The President said  he was awaiting the report of the investigation by the Ministry of Sports to ensure that the lessons will guide the country in future events.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports has launched a strategic plan for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics.

The plan seeks to train and facilitate officials of the disable sports federations who will travel to the counties to search and tap talents that will be used to form the national teams for the qualifiers for Brazil.

To make sure the initiative succeed, the Government has allocated Sh1m to each federation for disabled sports that will be used on selected officials sacouting for talent.

Besides, the Government will furnish the federations with training kit and equipments during the training.

Kenya Sitting Volleyball Federation is the first association to benefit from the fund and equipment last week at national training at Nyayo National stadium in Nairobi.

The training ended with the graduation of participants who will proceed to the counties to search for talents.

“Following the lackluster performance at the London Games, we have decided to effect one of the Ministry’s performance contracts which is the strategic plan for the Rio Paralympics.

The officials trained in this programme will be responsible for searching of talent  to  be used to form national teams that will represent the country in the qualifiers for the 2016 Paralympics,” said Carolyn Kariuki, Officer in Charge of Persons with Disability Sports at the Sports Ministry.
