KCB set new target after Kakamega 7s win

After leading his charges to the title at the inaugural Kakamega Sevens last weekend, KCB Sevens coach Denis Mwanja has set his sights on helping the club clinch the remaining five legs of the National Sevens Circuit. 

The Kakamega victory earned the bankers their first Sevens title since they won the 2017 Prinsloo Sevens and Mwanja is optimistic they will replicate that performance in the remaining rounds.

“There is no pressure on us at all. We are not in unfamiliar territory because we have been in a similar situation; the last time we won the circuit four years ago and our target now is to win everything,” Mwanja said.

The club’s new signings Johnstone Olindi, Levy Amunga and Shadon Munoko, who made their debut in Kakamega, played a crucial role in KCB’s run to the title but Mwanja opted to redirect the praises to the entire lot. 

The two-time National Sevens Circuit winners also dominated the individual accolades with Kenya Sevens player Vincent Onyala scooping all the available awards.

Onyala, who featured prominently for Shujaa during the 2018-19 World Sevens Series, was the tournament’s top try-scorer after crossing the whitewash 11 times in the two-day tournament.

The forward also scooped the Most Valuable Player gong while his 55 points, which emanated from the 11 tries he scored, saw him land the top try scorer award. 

Consequently, KCB assumed the leadership of the standings with 22 points, three more than Circuit defending champions Homeboyz whom they beat in the Kakamega Sevens final.

Meanwhile, Impala Sevens coach Oscar Osir expressed contentment with the 10 points they collected in their Kakamega assignment.

“It was a disappointing loss in the quarter-finals and the challenge was for the boys to pick themselves up and play in the other levels of the competition,” Osir said after his side lost to Strathmore in the fifth place semi-finals.

And just like Mwanja, Osir too did not want to praise individual players as his men shift focus to this weekend’s  Kabeberi Sevens in Meru.

“It was generally a solid team effort and I wouldn’t single out anyone in particular,” said Osir.
