The South African National Sevens coach Paul Treu has  left the Springboks after the expiry of his contract and is expected in Nairobi for negotiations with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).

He comes when the team is preparing for HSBC Sevens World series that kicks-off with the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia from October 11-12.

KRU chairman Muthee Mwangi confirmed that Treu is a front-runner in the job besides other coaches from New Zealand.

“Until we put pen on paper is when we’ll know who is our National Sevens coach,” he explained while expressing confidence in the interim coach Felix Ochieng.

Mwangi said whoever will be recruited by the union must have a long term plan of taking the team to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in Brazil.

KRU vice chairman Sasha Mutai also confirmed that they were interested in the South African tactician and are still involved in the negotiations.

Negotiations on

“We are still doing negotiations and it is just a matter of days before we name him,” said Mutai.

The coach who will be confirmed in the next ten days according to KRU chairman will most likely be in charge of the team at the Dubai Sevens from November 29-30.

Mwangi said the boys are in high spirits although they have a few knocks, which he hopes will not hamper their performance in Australia.

The team include captain Andrew Amonde, Fabian Olando and Philip Wamae (KCB), Oscar Ouma (Nakuru), Collins Injera and Dan Sikuta (Mwamba), Patrice Agunda, Felix Ayange, Eden Agero and Sidney Ashioya (Harlequin), Billy Odhiambo (Nondescripts) and Billy Odhiambo (Strathmore Leos).

Its managers are Felix Ochieng’ (coach), team manager Steve Sewe, physiotherapist George Odhiambo and Michael Owino (Strength andConditioning coach).

They are in Pool A together with defending champions New Zealand, Tonga and USA.

“No team can be underrated at the world stage. Each match should be played as a final,” he said.

Meanwhile, the South African Rugby Union(SARU) thanked Treu for his services to Springbok Sevens rugby and paid glowing tribute to his contribution in developing the seven-a-side game in his country.

SARU President Oregan Hoskins confirmed Treu’s departure according to the International Rugby Board website – www.irb.com.

“After long discussions with Treu, players and other Sevens stakeholders, a mutual decision had been reached to seek a new head coach for the Springbok Sevens team after his departure,” Hoskins told the website.

Hoskins and SARU Chief Executive Officer Jurie Roux met Treu on Tuesday to amicably conclude their discussions.
