Felix Ochieng’ prepares team for Safaricom 7s

The Kenya Sevens Team for the forthcoming Safaricom Safari Sevens are in top shape for the global event.

Andrew Amonde, who captained Kenya to fourth position at the World Cup in Moscow, will lead the team again.

The team have such top players like Humphrey Kayange of the University of Bristol and Mwamba’s Collins Injera and Lavin Asego.

The team will be training under assistant coach Felix Ochieng’ as the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and the rugby fraternity await the announcement of the new coach who will take over from Briton Mike Friday, whose contract ended in July.

KRU Chairman Mwangi Muthee said on the Union website on Friday that the announcement of the new coach will be delayed.

“Kenyans will have to wait slightly longer for the appointment of a coach for the Kenya Sevens team. This is owing to several factors that need to be put into consideration before the appointment and announcement can be done,” Muthee wrote on the website.

“Assistant Coach Felix Ochieng will continue handling the team until the appointment of the next coach,” he said.

The Union held talks with South Africa’s Paul Treu last week, but no deal was signed.

Meanwhile, ticket prices for the 2013 Safaricom Sevens have been announced. This year’s tournament takes place at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani from September 20-22 and will feature the main international tournament, where winners compete for the Robin Cahill trophy, as well as several subsidiary tournaments all taking place within the Kasarani complex.
