Kenya Uganda teams to clash in a return leg of the Elgon Cup in Kampala

The Kenya Rugby National Women’s team is plotting a clinical display in Kampala for the second leg of the Elgon Cup.

Speaking to FeverPitch ahead of the games, head Coach Kevin Wambua slammed the number of penalties they conceded in their first leg in Nairobi last weekend and said they are aiming to make fewer mistakes as they attempt to defend their one point margin from their last game.

“They have a fairly good kicker, who can slot in the penalties, when given the chance,” he explained.

Wary Of Threats

“We are wary of the threat she poses and the only way to contain her is by not giving away silly penalties. Last weekend, we gave away points that could have easily been avoided.”

On the measures the team have taken to minimise the penalties the coach said: “We have put in quite a bit of effort with the forwards, which is where I believe we struggled last time. If we can set up a good platform, I believe our backline players have what it takes to easily beat the Ugandan defence line.”

The optimistic tactician said they are ready to defend their title and are fullly focused on  victory even though a draw might be enough to get them through.

Meanwhile, the male’s team is in equally high spirits as they prepare to play in the main contest at the Kyadondo stadium.                 Speaking to FeverPitch from Uganda captain Brian Nyikuli reassured fans that they know what went wrong in their narrow 18-17 loss at Kasarani and they will be rectifying that today.

“We failed to utilise our chances and that will not happen again,”  he said.

“We have trained the whole week and we target to bring the cup back home.”

The team arrived in Kampala on Thursday evening and Nyikuli is confident the toll of the trip travelled have no effect of the side who had Friday to freshen and rest ahead of the do or die fixture.

Head coach Jerome Paarwater has included in the squad Wilson Kopondo who missed last weekend’s encounter owing to a relation bereavement. Dropped from the squad are Anthony Mutai, Sammy Oliech and Lyle Asiligwa.

Speaking at the RFUEA Grounds while naming the travelling party, Paarwater said: “We dominated first leg, unfortunately the scoreboard showed something else. There isn’t much we need to change in terms of our plays, we just need to work on our finishing.”
