Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura says it was necessary for Cabinet Secretaries to be dispatched to various parts of the country for the tree planting exercise on Monday.

Mwaura, while speaking to journalists on Wednesday, November 15, said it was important for the Cabinet Secretaries (CS) to lead Kenyans by example.

A section of Kenyans had lamented that the dispatch was an expensive affair that cost taxpayers their money bearing in mind that the government had to hire helicopters for the exercise.

“I have seen people asking why cabinet secretaries and government officials are hopping from one place to the other. It is because leadership is singular,” said Mwaura.

He added; “You’ve got to be there and to show to the people that you must lead from the front, people follow what the leaders are doing. The thrust a CS would have is different from that of a County Commissioner.”

By Tuesday, November 14, Mwaura claimed over 150 million trees were planted on National Tree Growing Day. He adds that the government also got funding from well wishers.

“Tree is life and because of the reduction of forest cover, you can see the calamities that are happening, the depletion of the ozone layer and the threats to livelihoods so we must spend money on it, it is not a luxury, it is a must, it is for our current and future generation,” he said.
