Lakers Hockey Club on Saturday stunned former champions Blazers 1-0 at Kisumu Day High School to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2023 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women's Premier League season.

Maureen Achieng's goal in the first minute was enough to hand the Kisumu based outfit maximum points and stretch their unbeaten run to three games.

The win left Lakers fourth with seven points, a point behind third placed Amira Sailors who have played a game more.

Speaking after the win, Lakers head coach Austin Tuju said they are happy to have broken their winless jinx against Blazers who have been frustrating them for the past two seasons.

Lakers have played against Blazers four times in the local league and once in the Africa Club Championship.

In the local league, Lakers have drawn three times (including twice when at home) and they have lost once (2-1 in November 2019). The two teams drew 1-1 in the continental games held in Kenya in February.

"We have played them five times in the past where the best we could manage is a draw. This year we were ready for them. Despite the challenges we are facing with lack of funds and irregular trainings, I give it to the girls today, Congratulations," said Tuju.

Scorpions lead the standings with 11 points after six matches followed by Blazers with nine points after three matches. Sailors are third with eight points after playing four matches.
