After their debacle in the 98th edition of the Annual Tannahill Golf Tournament early this month, Royal Nairobi Golf Club are ready to redeem themselves in the inaugural Kenya Dental Association (KDA) Golf Tournament which they will host on Friday.

The hosts have fielded a strong squad in the event whose objective is to raise funds to support dental schools at the University of Nairobi and at Moi University.

Royal's lineup is composed of club chairman Jatinder Thethy, club captain Peter Mwangi, vice-captain Richard Owino, Korby Gatiramu, James Kamenchu and Kevin Juma.

"We are hopeful that one of our players will emerge victorious, though we are expecting a very tough and challenging tournament due to the condition of the pitch," club's resident pro Alfred Nandwa told Standard Sports.

"The greens are playing pretty fast. The fairways are very smooth due to the ongoing rains in Nairobi. There are a lot of roughs outside the fairways," he explained.

However, Nandwa, who is part of the tournament organizing committee, said the par 72 course is in good condition despite the chilly weather currently rocking the Kenyan capital.

He has advised participants to expect several barriers on the course that is playing long, notably in holes 4 and 5 in the front nine and holes 16 and 18 in the back nine.

"Par-5 two has a water barrier on the left, so you need to play safe, don't go wild in the par-4 four, just keep the ball in play," he stated.

"Hole 16 is a par-4 which is dog-legged to the right, there is no play zone in the right, this might take you right to the dam which will force you to take a penalty.

"Hole 18 is very tricky, there is no play zone on the left with the Out of Bounds on the right. Basically, it's a hilly long stretch with pin position surrounded by barriers," he explained.

KDA Vice Treasurer Dr. Liz Bwibo who is also part of the organizing committee noted that the other objective of the tournament will be to create oral health awareness among participants.

"We will offer Dental screening and oral health education as part and parcel of the event. We will field a strong team to represent dentist in this inaugural golfing event of our association," said Bwibo who is looking forward to starting her golfing lessons from the clinic that will run alongside the tournament.

The golf clinic, to be held in the afternoon, is meant to demystify the sport and introduce new players to the game.
