After being stretched to the limit, Gor now ready to deliver

Gor Mahia moved top of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League after defeating Ulinzi Stars 2-0 on Sunday as the race to win the 2022-2023 title took a new twist.

Defending champions Tusker, who were top heading into the weekend fixtures, dropped to second after a shocking 2-1 defeat to relegation-fighting Wazito at Muhoroni Stadium in Kisumu.

At Kasarani Stadium, Austin Odhiambo and Patrick Kaddu scored inside the opening 10 minutes as Gor ended their three-match winless run in their 2-0 victory against the soldiers.

Gor had lost 1-0 to AFC Leopards and drawn 0-0 against Wazito and Tusker, results that derailed their title push and they needed a win to revive their push again.

The victory moved Gor two points clear at the top of the table ahead of Tusker, whose defeat in Kisumu slows down Robert Matano's title push.

Speaking after the win, Gor head coach Jonathan McKinstry said he is hopeful of delivering the league title and the fight is not yet over despite going tops.

"I am glad the boys are playing well and it's a good thing we are back on top, where we belong. I am pleased with the players and now our focus shifts to our last two matches against Homeboyz and City Stars," he said.

"The fight is not yet over, despite us moving top because we still have to be at our best. Homeboyz are a really hard team to play against, but we will be ready."

Ulinzi assistant coach Abdalla Mohamed said they were punished for their slow start to the game.

"Unfortunately, we conceded two early goals knowing very well Gor likes to start games with early attacks, a tactic we discussed and planned to defend," said Mohamed.

"We know we are having a poor form where we have not won any of our last three matches but we are hopeful of finishing strongly in the remaining two games," added the tactician.

Collins Neto's opener in the 15th minute gave Wazito a 1-0 halftime lead before Charles Momanyi restored parity in the 79th minute. An 86th penalty by Neto sealed an unlikely victory for Wazito who moved four points clear off Mathare United in the race to secure the 16th spot which is the promotion and relegation playoff spot.

The Slum Boys, who lost 1-0 Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium are now second last with 22 points, while Wazito have 26 points.

In Mumias, Vihiga Bullets, who are already relegated to the National Super League next season, shocked AFC Leopards 2-1.

Other results saw KCB defeat Bidco United 1-0 while Kenya Police thrashed Posta Rangers 3-1.
