Five most expensive football managers in the world

A managerial record was broken on Tuesday with the announcement that Julian Nagelsmann is to join Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig at the end of the season.

The highly-rated 33-year-old was also believed to be on Tottenham's radar, but Bayern acted quickly to ensure he would be the man to replace Hansi Flick for the start of the 2021-22 campaign.

Nagelsmann's contract at Leipzig was due to run until 2023, and for that reason Bayern are having to pay a world-record fee for a coach in order to land their man.

But they will be hoping it is worth it when a new era begins at the Bundesliga giants.

Here is a look at the five most expensive managerial buyouts in football history...

5. Jose Mourinho (Inter Milan to Real Madrid, £7m)

It seems like a long time ago now, but back in 2010 Jose Mourinho was still one of the most in-demand managers in world football.

He had just won a sensational treble with Inter Milan, guiding them to glory in the Serie A, Champions League and Italian Cup.

And he replaced Manuel Pellegrini at the Bernabeu after Madrid agreed a then-record £7m compensation package with Inter.

Mourinho went on to spend a mixed three years in the Spanish capital, where he won one La Liga title and a Copa del Rey but failed to bring in a Champions League and was regularly outshone by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.

4. Ruben Amorim (Braga to Sporting Lisbon, £8.6m)

Not quite such a well-known name as 'The Special One', perhaps, but Ruben Amorim impressed enough to convince Sporting Lisbon to part with around £8.6m to pry him from Braga midway through last season.

The 36-year-old was not even in charge of Braga for four months before Sporting made their move in March 2020, but in that time had won them the Portuguese League Cup and had quickly established a reputation as one of the brightest young coaches around.

After Sporting sacked then-manager Silas they paid a hefty fee to secure Amorim, but so far it has been worth it, with the ex-Benfica player leading them to his second League Cup in a row and with his side top of the Primeira Liga and on course for their first title since 2002.

3. Brendan Rodgers (Celtic to Leicester, £9.1m)

Another manager who has been well worth his weight in gold so far is Brendan Rodgers.

Leicester secured the services of the former Liverpool boss in February 2019 after he had won two SPLs, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups with Celtic.

Since then he has totally transformed Leicester, and the Foxes look on course to qualify for next season's Champions League after yet another impressive Premier League campaign.

And although he has been linked with Tottenham recently, Rodgers has dismissed the speculation and looks set to stay at the King Power for the foreseeable future.

2. Andre Villas-Boas (Porto to Chelsea, £13m)

The story of Andre Villas-Boas was not quite as successful as the other names on this list.

After guiding Porto to an undefeated season in the Primeira Liga and also winning the Europa League, Chelsea splashed out to bring in the man hailed as the 'new Mourinho' in June 2011.

But Villas-Boas lasted just eight months at Stamford Bridge before being ruthlessly sacked after failing to mount a title challenge with the Blues.

Since then he has gone on to take charge of Spurs, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Shanghai SIPG and Marseille, but has never managed to live up to early expectations.

1. Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich, £21.7m)

But as already mentioned, the fee involved in Nagelsmann making the switch from Leipzig to Bayern will become the new world-record paid for a manager at an expected £21.7m.

It is easy to see why Bayern are so convinced he is worth the price given the huge impact Nagelsmann has had in both the Bundesliga and Champions League over the last two seasons.

But there will be big pressure on the young man's shoulders to continue to deliver the goods in Bavaria, and it will be intriguing to see if he can handle the step up to such a giant of European football.
