Arsenal have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a possible transfer for defender Jose Gimenez.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report the Gunners are keen to tie up a deal for the centre-half as they bid to solve their woes at the back.

Gimenez has a release clause of £56million but Arsene Wenger is reportedly hopeful of landing a deal for around £40million.

Arsenal have a crisis in the centre of their defence after injuries to Gabriel and Per Mertesacker while Laurent Koscielny is still battling back to full fitness after Euro 2016.
