Over 200 golfers to paint Nyali Country Course white and green

An estimated 200 golfers will be celebrating World Tourism Week in style by battling for honors in a golf tournament to be played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The Golfers who are expected to paint the course Green during the day and white in the evening as the official dress code will be battling for top honors in the 2023 Kenya Association of Women in Tourism (KAWT) Golf Tournament to commemorate World Tourism Week.

KAWT Mombasa County Chapter Chairperson Janet Chamia who is the host Organizer said the tourney supported by Tourism Fund is aimed at creating Green awareness and is always celebrated annually during the World Tourism Day/week.

Chamia said the daylong 18 holes tourney is expected to raise funds for their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in buying sanitary pads and paying schools fees for the less privileged members in the society.

"KAWT is a professional body and non-profit association, whose primary mandate is to provide a platform for women's empowerment through engagement, employment and participation in the tourism industry, "said Chamia.

She pointed out that the Association aims to unite and mobilize women in the tourism and hospitality sector to take an active role in the promotion of tourism in Kenya and come up with programs that promote and enhance social harmony.

"It also aims to serve women and children in close cooperation with all sectors of the society, to mobilize and coordinate all social forces to develop supportive services for women and children, "said Chamia.

She said that the event with the theme 'Tourism and Green Investment' that will be graced by the Association's National Chairman Jane Adam among other prominent guests was being held at Nyali for the first time but will be an annual tournament.

She noted that among their local lady golf members from Mombasa County to watch on the day includes Annemarie de Jong, Susan Stokes, Mary Kandu, Christine Ockotch, Truphena Oyaro and Terry Odoo.

The Men side has also lined up a strong team that includes among them Jabess Mdhai,Charles Odoo, Vishnu Dhutia,Dr.Mukesh Patel, William Kaguta,and juniors Aydan Jamal and Chauhan Shay.

Club Captain Dinesh Sasan and Lady Captain Mary Mariga assured the golfers that the course in its pristine condition, playing well and as assured by the Club's green keeper George Choge, this time the pin positions will be placed in friendly spots to ensure the day's game is full fun and enjoyable.

The event was last held in April at the par 72 Diamond Leisure Golf Resort Course in South Coast of Mombasa, Kwale County where Ken Ndede emerged the overall winner on a count back score of 38 stable ford points.

Home Club's Naomi Wambui was the Lady winner on 34 points and the Club's current top junior, Lucas Kampa claimed the best junior prize with 31 points.

KAWT Kwale Chapter Chairlady Pauline Nduva said that the funds raised out of the tournament was effectively utilized in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and various outreach programmes around the County.
