Boxing: Okoth punches his way into quarter-finals

Nick Okoth proceeded to the quarter-finals of the boxing competition after dispatching his Cameroonian opponent Tchwem Foukoua in the lightweight category at the Talangai Hall on Monday evening.

Samson Mulinge also beat his opponent, Prince Moukouyou of the Republic of Congo, in the flyweight category. Tobias Okeyo Ayot was not lucky as he lost the light heavyweight bout to Dan Woko Ekele of Nigeria on points as did Dennis Shisia, who lost to Efe Ajagbaa of Nigeria in the super heavyweight category.

In badminton, held at Revolution Wenje Hall, Kenyans won six and lost two games. Victor Odera and Patrick Kinyua won their singles matches while Mercy Joseph won in the singles and doubles. Lavina Martins and Joseph Matheri won the ixed doubles to proceed to the third round that was being played yesterday.

Sheila Wanjiru and Matheri lost in the singles events.

In Karate, defending champion Danny Minisa of Gabon dispatched with Anthony Fondo in record time in the under-67kg event, moments after Rose Wanjiku had lost controversially to Rosa Muchanga of Mozambique in the under-55kg event on Monday. David Kimani lost to an Egyptian opponent.

In football, the Super Falcons of Nigeria beat hosts Congo Brazzaville 5-1 in their first game in the women’s football event, add Agency reports. Desire Oparanozie scored four times, before Love Chinasa scored the Falcons’ fifth, at the Makelekele Sports Stadium.
