"Take responsibility, stay clean," is the theme for this year's Safaricom Sports Personality of The Year Awards (Soya).
While launching this year's awards, Soya founder and Chairman Paul Tergat said there was urgent need to address doping issue, which has tainted the Kenyan image on the international scene.
"Soya awards were founded to recognise, appreciate and award exceptional achievements attained through hardwork, discipline and dedication. That is why our winners should be individuals of high integrity beyond reproach," Tergat said, adding that the awards will create awareness and advocate for clean sports.
"Sports flourish within a clean environment, therefore it is our duty to do what we can to create and protect a drug-free environment."
Tergat also reminded the judging panel of the tough task ahead, saying this will be the most challenging assignment after a series of sterling performances in various sports disciplines this year.
"I don't envy you (judges) because your work will not be easy this time. All in all, we look forward to an exciting contest among nominees in the respective categories. It is our tradition in Soya to award the best and it is up to you to select a few winners from a big pool of excellent athletes."
The panel comprises sports editors and reporters and will be chaired by Watson Karuma, who succeeds Evelyn Watta. Others are Robin Toskin, Chris Mbaisi, James Wokabi, James Waindi, Lyne Wachira, Mutwiri Mutuota and Ayumba Ayodi.
Tergat also thanked Soya official sponsors Safaricom, who have sponsored the event since its inception, Multichoice Kenya, Supersport and Kenya Tourism board, for supporting the initiative.
Safaricom gave Sh15 million in a renewed sponsorship deal for this year's event, which will see best sports personalities awarded in a gala to be held on January 15 next year.
