National duathlon elite women champion Catherine Kariuki and Gideon Rutto, who was second in last year's event, will participate in 2020 championships set for Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa on Sunday.

The duo will be part of a squad of top athletes, who will parade for the event to be used to select the national team to the Africa Duathlon championships in Rwanda, from December 8 to 14.

Kenya Triathlon Federation boss Jocelyne Nyambura said the weekend event was sponsored by Mombasa County Government.

“To mark the return of competition in our calendar of events after a long break due the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kenya Triathlon Federation, in collaboration with the Department of Sports in the County Government of Mombasa, will stage the national duathlon championships at the Mama Ngina Waterfront on Sunday, where we shall select 30 athletes for the continental championships,” said Ms Nyambura.

She said athletes from Mombasa, Nairobi, Kwale, Kilifi, Machakos and Narok would take part. Others will be from Nandi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Kiambu and Murang’a.

Nyambura said athletes will compete in cycling (20km) and running (5km and 2km).

“The selected athletes will travel to Rwanda early enough,” said Nyambura.
