Heavyweights Shimo La Tewa, Kaya Tiwi and Shimba Hills qualified for county games unscathed after dominating in their respective sub-county championships.
Shimo La Tewa swept the boards during the Mombasa County Kisauni sub-branch secondary schools Term One games at Shanzu Teachers Training College. They won boys’ handball, basketball, rugby and dominated in athletics too. [Ernest Ndunda]
In handball, they were equally ruthless as they whitewashed Concordia School 39-7 before defeating Frere Town School 37-2 to emerge victorious. Concordia finished second after beating Frere Town School 9-6. In the only girls’ handball match, Valery School defeated Concordia 16-2.
The top two teams qualified to represent the sub-county at the Mombasa County games scheduled for March 4-5 at Shanzu Teachers Training College and Shimo La Tewa High School.
In Kwale County Matuga sub-county games, Kaya Tiwi and Shimba Hills dominated the games at the latter’s playgrounds.
In boys’ rugby 7s, Kaya Tiwi needed a single try to edge out Shimba Hills 5-0 in a tough final.
On their way to the final, Kaya Tiwi scored a converted try to beat Kwale High School 7-0 while Shimba Hills defeated Lukore 32-0 in the other one-sided match.
In rugby 15s, Waa Boys hit Kwale High 12-7 before winning 3-0 against Kwale High in hockey.
Waa Girls shocked former champions Matuga Girls 2-0 in hockey. In boys’ handball, Kaya Tiwi hit Ambassador Mwakwere 15-10 while Shimba Hills whitewashed Mwaluphamba 33-5.
Ng’ombeni defeated Kombani 17-4 in another boys’ handball match. In boys’ basketball, former champions Shimba Hills beat Waa Boys 33-12 while former Coast secondary schools girls basketball champions Matuga defeated Waa Girls 16-11.
Former national girls’ basketball champions Kaya Tiwi won their matches to retain the sub county title. They beat Matuga girls 138-2 and Shimba Hills 98-6.
