Kenyans shine in IDPA World Championships

The 2019 SIG SAUER International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA)  World Championships ended on Saturday at the CMP Range in Talladega , Alabama with over 500 shooters from 29 countries participating in the week-long event .

It was a maiden appearance for the Kenyan team of 12  at the Championship, and  for South Africa too who were represented by a team of 6.

The shooters withstood the harsh weather conditions to record superb results in the speed and accuracy triggered contest.

The reigning Africa Champion Ian Van Der Bank from South Africa managed 2nd position SSP Master and 1st position SSP Master International.

Kenya  and South Africa entered into the books of history by becoming the first African countries to qualify & participate at the IDPA World Championships.

Geoffrey Pesa from Kenya becomes the first African to participate in  the 2 Gun Discipline at the World Championship in Pistol Carbine Calibre (PCC) and Pistol.

Elizabeth Wachianga of Kenya Prisons Department became the first black lady - law enforcement participant at the World Championship.

Speaking to Standard, the team Captain and Chairman of the National Gun Owners Association Anthony Wahome expressed his joy over the results citing team work, commitment and training as the winning formula.

Wahome commended the IDPA Secretariat for squadding the entire Kenyan team to shoot.

“ Only 3 of the 12 shooters who travelled to Talladega, Alabama had been squadded to shoot, the rest had been placed on a waiting list, but with the intervention of the secretariat, they were squadded to shoot a day before the shoot ended .” He said.

The NGAO-Kenya Vice Chairman Sammy Onyango hailed the team on their performance and said the association is now looking forward to hosting the 2020 IDPA Africa Championships in Kenya

Benjamin Muema of Kenya Prisons was all praises to the National Gun Owners Association for having organized the travel and participation of all the shooters and referred to the experience as one of a lifetime.
