KPL results: Sony retain league status as Tusker bottled

Financially-stricken Sony Sugar retained their Kenyan Premier League status after honouring yesterday’s match against visiting Kisumu All Stars in Awendo.

The match which ended in a 1-1 draw was big relief to the millers who were staring at relegation after skipping their previous two consecutive fixtures against AFC Leopards and Tusker due to lack of funds.

John Mwita gave James Nandwa’s men an early first half lead only for Gerishome Arabe to cancel it out from the spot three minutes into the second half. This was All Stars’ second draw after losing five of their first six opening matches of the season.

“We played well and tried very much to win but we were unlucky once more.

“The players were not very aggressive and we missed most of the clear goal scoring chances,” said Kisumu All Stars coach Henry Omino.

It was a different scenario in Awasi as another sugar-belt side Chemelil Sugar continued with poor run in the league falling 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz, just a week after dishing out a walk over to Bandari.

Shami Mwinyi and David Odhiambo scored a goal each to help Homeboyz go level on points (13) with Tusker, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ulinzi Stars in Nakuru.

Daniel Waweru’s second half thunderbolt is all that the soldiers needed to beat Tusker.

KCB leapfrogged the brewers into the second place after beating Zoo 2-1 in Machakos while Nzoia and Kariobangi Sharks shared the spoils.
