Wayne Rooney to take part in boxing match?

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has claimed that former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney "would love to do a charity fight".

Rooney is known to be an avid fighting fan and was infamously floored by former United team-mate Phil Bardsley in a kitchen spar back in 2015.

Hearn confirmed on Tuesday that he will promote KSI's rematch with fellow YouTube sensation Logan Paul in November, with the social media influencers to turn professional and fight over six three-minute rounds.

And while discussing with TalkSport whether he would be willing to promote other celebrities, he revealed that DC United striker Rooney has previously suggested he would be willing to step in the ring.

"Loads (of celebs have spoken about taking part in a charity match). But more like people like Wayne Rooney," Hearn explained.

"I’ve got a podcast, he was on there recently, he loves it. He’s been boxing in amateur clubs.

"Wayne would love to do a charity fight. All these guys, they love boxing."

Hearn also revealed that the United hero has even joked about taking on former club and international team-mate Rio Ferdinand, who attempted to launch a professional boxing career but was denied a license last year.

Hearn added: "The only way I’d do a fight like that is if there was a huge amount of money for charity.

"I said that to Wayne Rooney before, he was joking about fighting Rio [Ferdinand] before when Rio was getting into his boxing.

"That’s an opportunity, a Sport Relief event or something like that, to make big money for charity."

Rooney is currently playing in the States with MLS side DC United but will return to England in January to join Championship side Derby in a player-coach role.
