Sofapaka forward John Avire was one of the surprise inclusions as the final 23 member team for the Africa Cup of Nations finals was named on Monday.

Called up by coach Sebastian Migne for the first time one month ago, Avire was always going to struggle to make it to the final team let along with the provisional squad.

But after weeks of training, Avire is among the 23 players to represent the country in next week’s Africa Cup of Nations final and he looks forward to starting for Kenya.

“This is something new in my life and obviously I am excited. It will add to my profile and is a big motivation to my career,” he said in France yesterday.

Avire said he was not entirely surprised to be in the final list of Sebastian Migne as he had worked very hard in training.

“I gave my best every day in training and was always determined to be among the best. It was a good opportunity that I was not going to let pass,” he said.

Avire can now dream to start for Kenya on June 23 in the first match of the Africa Cup of  Nations finals.

“I am ready to play if I get the chance. Having interacted with other experienced players, I have what it takes to do well if the opportunity comes. I am looking forward to giving my best again,” he said.

Avire started against Madagascar during last Friday’s international friendly and believes he gave an account of himself.

Prior to joining Sofapaka, Avire began his career at Bandari before moving to Kakamega Homeboyz and finally to Sofapaka. He scored seven goals for Sofapaka last season which remains his best performance so far.
