Matthijs de Ligt has responded to Manchester United's push to bring him to the Premier League, stating his future is far from certain.

De Ligt is certain to leave Champions League semi-finalists Ajax this summer.

Holland's Footballer of the Year will depart the Amsterdammers after leading them to the Dutch league and cup double, but his future is still to be decided.

Barcelona had been leading the race but, with finances tight at Camp Nou, aren't willing to do a deal on the terms of the 19-year-old's agent, Mino Raiola.

Now United are looking to snap up the Dutch international, moving in when Barcelona refused to pay Raiola £12million to broker the move.

Sources in Holland have told Mirror Sport that United have agreed to outbid any club and meet Raiola’s demands for a £350,000-a-week wage - almost £17m per year - and a huge fixer’s fee.

De Ligt has previously claimed he will only move to a side in the Champions League, but when asked about a possible switch to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, he was remaining coy.

“I have read the reports about Manchester United,” De Ligt told FOX Sports . “I have seen the salary I would get, too. Would you take it?

“People should take these reports with a grain of salt. The stories are funny though.

“Everyone has been talking about my future for a year now. One day I will go there, and the next day I will go somewhere else.

“I have made quite a tour through Europe haven’t I?

“My focus is on the Nations League and after that I will see what will happen.”

Barcelona have already landed De Ligt's close friend and Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong.

But Barca have struggled to convince the player of their plans for his future, and told agent Raiola that they would not be upping their contract offer.

Now club president Josep Maria Bartomeu is set to step in, according to reports in Spain, to seal the deal to land De Ligt personally, as he did with De Jong in January.

If he cannot seal a deal, then United are waiting in the wings, while the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are also monitoring the situation.
