Oduor Gangla was on Wednesday, March 20 elected as the new chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union(KRU) during an Annual General Meeting held in Nairobi.

Gangla, who until his win was the KRU Secretary-General, garnered 33 votes, flooring his closest competitor Alexander "Sasha" Mutai who managed 20 votes.

Former KCB Rugby Club chairperson Asiko Owiro was third with two votes.

Gangla's elevation to the top seat means that the KRU board will convene a meeting to appoint his replacement in the position of Secretary General.

Gangla has previously served as chairman for Kenya Cup side Impala Saracens.

During his playing days, he featured for Mean Machine, Blak Blad, Strathmore Leos as well as Impala.

He will serve as KRU chairman for the next four years.

Meanwhile, the third agenda of the AGM which was the appointment of auditors for the next year did not go on as planned.

On the eve of the AGM, the Ministry of Sports had issued a directive that the meeting is adjourned to a later date to allow for deliberations with stakeholders but KRU opted to go on with the meeting as planned.

"This decision is anchored upon clause 12.4 of the KRU constitution which provides that a duly constituted General Meeting can only be adjourned at that particular meeting," KRU said in a statement.
