Big contest set for Mau next week

More than 5,000 athletes are expected at the sixth Mau-Egerton Cross Country to be held at Njoro campus on Saturday next week.

With the World Cross Country trials set for February 23 in Eldoret, some of the elite athletes will use the Mau-Egerton race to prepare for selections to the 43rd IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, on March 30.

Athletes who have expressed interest to take part in the race are past winners Bernard Kipkemoi and Caroline Chepkoech, who won in 2015 and 16.

The race got a boost following APA Insurance’s partnership for a sixth consecutive year where they have injected Sh300,000 this year.

“We are committed to protecting and conserving the environment and we are happy sponsoring the event since its inception. Our objective is to plant and maintain at least 1,000 trees every year,” said APA Insurance Nakuru Branch Manager Meena Shah when she presented the sponsorship cheque to Egerton University Vice Chancellor Rose Mwonya.
