Manchester United have been charged by UEFA over the pitch invasion during the Champions League defeat to Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo was approached by fans on separate occasions during and after the clash at Old Trafford.

Shortly after kick-off, a fan ran across the pitch with his hand down the back of his trousers before being restrained by stewards.

Two fans also tried to get to Ronaldo after full-time on his return to his former club.

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against United, with a hearing set to be held on November 22.

A United spokesperson said: "We will be responding to the UEFA charge and we are reviewing our pitchside security protocols in the light of the pitch incursions at last night’s game."

It is the second time United have been charged this season by UEFA - although they have escaped punishment for their late arrival at Old Trafford.

United were last week fined €15,000 euros (around £13,000) by UEFA for their late arrival and the subsequent delayed kick-off of their Champions League match against Valencia.

Those issues reappeared on Tuesday, with Juventus arriving 65 minutes before kick-off and United getting to Old Trafford just 50 minutes before play got underway. Manager Jose Mourinho decided to walk to the ground.

Ronaldo intervened on both occasions with the pitch invaders, the first time holding out his hand for the individual to shake

All the while Jose Mourinho was watching the drama from the touchline, as the BT Sport cameras panned over to capture his reaction.

He could be seen laughing at the episode as the man finally left the pitch and the game resumed.

At full-time, Ronaldo quickly snapped a selfie with the second pitch invader as he was being restrained by stewards.

Ronaldo was not on target on his return as Paulo Dybala scored the only goal of the game.
