WWE legend commits suicide

Former WWE superstar Brian Lawler has died aged 46.

Lawler, who competed in the WWE under the name of Grandmaster Sexay and elsewhere in professional wrestling as Brian Christopher, reportedly attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell outside Memphis.

His mother Kay told TMZ that Lawler passed away surrounded by family and friends after being placed on life support, which was turned off on Sunday evening.

His father Jerry, who is WWE's Hall of Fame commentator and still works for the company today, and brother Kevin were both also in attendance.

Kevin wrote on his personal Facebook page: "Lots of different stories and rumors about my brother today.

"But as of 30 minutes ago he has officially passed.

"I love U and will miss U my brother! A very sad day today. Words can't describe."

A WWE statement added: "WWE is saddened to learn that Brian Christopher Lawler, who is best known in WWE as Too Cool’s Grandmaster Sexay, has passed away.

"Lawler, who is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler, competed during the height of the Attitude Era.

"WWE extends its condolences to Lawler’s family, friends and fans."

Lawler was serving time in prison after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop for police officers who attempted to pull him over.

He was a favourite in the WWE between 1997 and 2001, appearing alongside Scotty 2 Hotty in the Too Cool tag team. The duo won the WWE Tag Team Championship once.

Although he was still wrestling in the professional scene, it has been reported that Lawler suffered financial issues in his personal life in the build up to his arrest.

He was hospitalised earlier this year following a fight with former TNA star Chase Stevens in a hotel room in Indiana.
