Picture of Lionel Messi pinned up in Manchester United’s dressing rooms –Here’s why

Lionel Messi cleans his own boots while on international duty with Argentina in 2014

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo being a former Manchester United player, it's Lionel Messi who takes pride of place in their academy dressing room at Carrington.

The picture shows the Barcelona star cleaning his boots on international duty after representing Argentina against Croatia at Upton Park in 2014.

Pinned to the dressing room wall, this rare snap, according to The Times, is intended to remind the players that even the biggest player in the world still takes care of the small, dirty jobs - he stays humble.

The picture clearly had the desired impact on Scott McTominay, who still parks his car at the front of Carrington, outside the academy, as opposed to round the back in the first team car park, the report adds.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, making 20 appearances this term.

On McTominay, Michael Carrick recently told Manchester United's official website: "You can see that he steps up to every challenge that has been set in every environment. He is an athlete.

"He is strong, quick and very good on the ball. He has got all of the attributes to have a really good career.

"I know he will take my place some day and that is not something I would be afraid of, or try to put him off, because it is important to help the future and Scott is definitely that. It is my responsibility to do all I can to help him."
