Rift Valley dominant in national schools championships

Rift Valley Region won most of the titles in different races and in the field events to emerge the overall winner of the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships at Kabarak University.

Rift Valley was followed by Nyanza and Western regions in that order as her athletes swept the board in most of the races from sprints to middle and long distance races on Friday.

In girls’ 100m, Pauline Wafula of Rift Valley clocked 12.6 seconds to win ahead of Mercy Azuvila of Western in 12.8 seconds and Mary Achieng of Nyanza in 12.9 seconds.

Mitch Karani also of Rift Valley clocked 10.9 seconds to win the boys’ 100m ahead of teammate Daniel Wasike who clocked 11.2 seconds with Joseph Lepatel of Eastern coming third in 11.3 seconds.

Athletics Kenya Universities chapter chairman Paul Tuitoek who stood in for Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei at the prize giving ceremony praised the standards witnessed and times registered at the event in different races and in the field events in the two-day competition that attracted eight regions.

“The times registered here portray we have future world beaters who would continue to dominate in the global athletics as a result of our performance from the primary to the secondary schools, which should proceed to the international arena,” he told Standards Sports.

Tuwei said the future of Kenyan runners in the world athletics is bright if the standards exhibited in the Kabarak Championships are anything to go by.
