Keino calls for law to take its course but in line with Olympic Charter

Dr Kipchoge Keino, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya President, insists he is not to blame for the 2016 Rio fiasco.

However, the 1968 Olympics 1,500m champion maintains the law must take its course since, “we came to this world with nothing and will go down with nothing.”

Last week, Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario disbanded Nock and transferred its operations to Sports Kenya following an uproar on how athletes and coaches were treated by Nock officials.

Keino arrived at Eldoret International Airport on Wednesday night to a warm reception from family members, friends and students from Kipkeino High School amid reports Police were looking for him. He said the government should allow the law to take its course and get to the bottom of the matter, adding that investigations should have been done before arresting the officials.

“Each one of us should account for our actions. But I think the officials should have been arrested and charged with clear evidence and not being apprehended and detained based on allegations,” said Dr Keino.

Four Nock officials Stephen Soi, James Chacha, F.K Paul and Fridah Shiroya have already been arraigned in court in connection with the matter.

Keino warned Kenya risks a ban from International Olympic Committee (IOC) over what they term as Government interference in sports federations and suggested that dialogue would unlock the stalemate.

“I think dialogue can best solve certain issues and not disbanding Nock. This will attract IOC action and the young generation will be affected,” he said.

Keino was feted in Rio by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach with Laurel Award for his outstanding achievement in social engagements.

Athletics Kenya chairman Barnaba Korir said Kenyans ought to appreciate the legendary track star’s contribution to sports.

“If we are to pay for his achievements, it would be too costly. I am sure he can’t steal. He gets an annual voucher of US$1,500 from Nike headquarters and can shop anywhere,” said Korir.
