Farmers urged to adopt modern practices

Smallholder farmers have been urged to engage in conservation agriculture to improve yields.

Players in the sector said a reduction in food losses could have an immediate and significant impact on the livelihoods of farmers, many of whom live on the margins of food insecurity.

The majority of Kenyans are smallholder farmers who depend entirely on agriculture.

The sector is the largest employer and major contributor to the Kenyan economy, accounting for 25 per cent of gross domestic product.

But of late, productivity has been gradually decreasing due to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and extensive land use.
