Farmers protest against cattle rustling in Elgeyo Marakwet

More than 100 residents from Elgeyo Marakwet County staged a protest to demand the arrest of suspects involved in livestock theft.

Led by former Sengwer ward MCA David Kipketer, the villagers walked 8 kilometres to the Maili Saba market in Trans Nzoia County, to advocate for an end to cattle rustling.

They called for the arrest and prosecution of suspected cattle rustlers who have allegedly stolen and slaughtered over 32 cows in the past three months.

Residents have also demanded strict regulation on meat inspection and sale to prevent stolen livestock from entering the food chain.

“This is not merely theft. It is a betrayal of the hard-working farmers who rise early each day to care for their animals. We have lost over Sh400,000 in livestock theft, and yet no one is being held accountable. We refuse to suffer in silence any longer,” Kipketer stated.

Affected villages include Kaboroa, Benon, and Chesubet, where residents say the livestock losses have crippled household incomes and left families struggling.

The pressure from the livestock farmers prompted a meeting with local security officers. Kwanza sub-county police commander Fred Abuga assured residents that authorities are pursuing critical leads in investigations into the matter.

“We understand your anger and frustration, and I want to assure you that we will not relent. Our officers from  Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo Marakwet counties are working around the clock to apprehend the four key suspects still at large," Abuga said.

He said one suspect, identified as the owner of a butchery where some of the stolen meat was allegedly sold, was arrested last Friday.

However, the suspect was released due to insufficient evidence linking him to the theft.

“He claimed to have unknowingly bought the meat from another suspect based in Kamoi, who remains on the run. We urge the public to share any information that can assist in tracking down these individuals. Your cooperation is vital,” Abuga said.
