“Evil spirits setting our home ablaze”- Bahati family claims

By Kennedy Gachuhi | July 15th 2020
Mbuthia said that he at first suspected his iron box had been left connected to the power supply and fallen on his bed.

A family in Bahati, Nakuru County is seeking spiritual intervention to fight evil spirits that have been hunting them for past three weeks.

Simon Mbuthia, a resident of Scode area claims that the spirits set their house on fire twice yesterday but managed to put it out with the assistance of their neighbours.

“My wife left the house early. At around 9 am I was on my way out and my daughter called me back saying there was smoke in my bedroom. I rushed back and found my bed on fire,” Mbuthia narrated.

After putting out the fire, Mbuthia said that he at first suspected his iron box had been left connected to the power supply and fallen on his bed.

“The iron box was still in its place and cold. I looked all around and couldn’t find any source of the fire. I immediately called a neighbour to help check out the house,” said Mbuthia.

His neighbour John Gathu, who is also a Nyumba Kumi leader was first to arrive at the scene and cast doubts on the narrative before more drama unfolded. “I didn’t believe the story though the bed and curtains were partly burnt. We started checking on electrical appliances within the living room. All had been switched off or disconnected,” said Gathu.

As the two held a brief conversation, Gathu said he was shocked when another fire started within the room as they watched.

“There was a bed in the sitting room and no open flames were visible. The bed caught fire from nowhere. At first, I thought of dashing out since I couldn’t see anyone next to the bed. I couldn’t believe it was a real fire until I saw the mattress burning. I put it out myself,” said Gathu.

His wife, Jane Wambui said this was not the first time such incidents were happening. “Last week I was working on the garden when my son told me there were people at the other end. I moved around and couldn’t see anything. He insisted there were two strangers who fled as I got closer. He had claimed to see the same figures the previous week while with my mother,” said Wambui.

Wambui added that they had informed their parents about the incidents but they too were startled saying they couldn’t understand the mysterious happenings at their home.

The family is now calling on clerics from the area to come to their rescue and cast the spirits out of their home.

“We are not at peace. I don’t know when they will strike next. I have informed a few pastors to conduct prayers at my home. I don’t understand any of this,” said Mbuthia.
