Shock as boy wakes up to find his mother dead

A 55-year-old woman was yesterday morning found murdered in a suspected love triangle in Simboyon village, Subukia, Nakuru County.

Eunice Chepngetich’s body was found by her Standard Eight son who had gone to check on her before leaving for school.

The boy normally sleeps in a neighbouring home, and had left his mother well after having supper together at 8am on Thursday.

When the boy went home yesterday morning, he first came across traces of blood, which led him to his mother’s body that was lying in a pool of blood on the floor of her house. Blood had also soaked several items in the house, a sign of a struggle between Chepngetich and assailants.

“The single mother was sleeping alone in her house during the brutal attack. Her body was found still oozing blood,” said Dan Kogo, a neighbour.

Kogo said the body had several deep cut wounds. He said the woman had been having an affair with a married man in the neighbourhood. The locals linked her death to this affair. “We suspect the woman was attacked by a kitchen knife while sleeping. It is unfortunate we could not rescue her as we did not hear her cry for help,” he said.

Before her death, Chepngetich had been ailing after she was allegedly attacked by the son of her suspected lover in November last year. The alleged attacker is said to have been unhappy about the relationship.

The suspect was arrested and the case is in court.

Subukia Sub-county Police Commander Jacinta Wangechi said the police visited the scene and took the body to Nyahururu Hospital morgue as they conduct investigations.

Cases of domestic killings in Nakuru are on the rise, according to police records, with most of them attributed to family wrangles and love affairs.

Meanwhile, property of at least 70 students went up in flames when a dormitory at Njoro Boys High School caught fire on Thursday night. Nobody was injured in the 1am fire. Njoro Sub-county Police Commander Mohamed Huka said the cause of the fire was not immediately established and investigations have been launched.

“Students were sleeping during the fire outbreak that destroyed property belonging to learners. Nobody was injured during the outbreak,” said Huka.
