Former workers awarded Sh4.9m for wrongful dismissal

Nakuru, Kenya: Three former employees of Kenya Railways Corporation have been awarded a total of Sh4.9 million for wrongful dismissal.

Gideon Mutindi and two other senior accountants will get damages of Sh1, 769,780, Sh992, 400 and Sh2, 144,446 respectively in the next 30 days following the ruling by Justice Byram Ongaya delivered on Friday in Nakuru.

The court further ordered the company to pay the costs of the 13 year old suit filed by Mr Mutindi.

The workers moved to court on September 2, 2001 demanding compensation for wrongful dismissal, retirement benefits, unpaid dues and allowances.

"The court hereby orders the company to pay the former employees before November 1," Ongaya ruled.
