Naivasha, Kenya: The Government plans to set up a medical college at the Naivasha Sub-county Hospital by the end of this year.

This emerged at the end of the two-day Naivasha Constituency Education Expo, which was attended by Deputy President William Ruto.

Ruto reiterated the Jubilee government’s commitment towards improving education standards, adding that funds for free secondary education had been increased by 35 per cent.

“We support the idea of starting a nursing college in Naivasha and I and the President have given Sh1.5 million to initiate this noble project,” he said.

Naivasha MP John Kihagi said that they had already identified land at the hospital where the college will be set up.

“We are committed to this project and we want the nursing school to open its door to students by the end of the year,” he said.

He added that they had set up a rolling fund for bright students from poor families in the area.

Kihagi said hundreds of youths from the constituency were dropping out of school due to lack of school fees and resorting to abuse of drugs and alcohol.

“We have launched a revolving fund that will be used towards assisting bright students who come from poor families,” he said.

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua hailed schools in the constituency for consistently posting good grades in national examinations.

“I am impressed by the education standards and performance in Naivasha and the county will continue to support this kind of initiatives,” he said.

Meanwhile, political leaders from the ruling Jubilee Coalition have rejected the calls for dialogue by the Coalition for reform and democracy (CORD) leader Rail Odinga.

The leaders said opposition leaders should stop politicking and articulate the real issues affecting Kenyans.

Speaking yesterday in Ol Kalou during the Madaraka Day’s celebrations, Starehe MP Maina Kamanda said they fully supported the Jubilee government and asked the opposition to stop criticising the Uhuru administration for the sake of it.

“We know CORD had all through pegged their hope on conviction of the President and his Deputy at the ICC, but they have resorted to discrediting the Government after realising that the cases are crumbling. It’s like a hyena that follows a man waiting for his swinging hand to fall,” he said amid cheers by the crowd.
