MPs ask President Uhuru Kenyatta not to attend ICC trial following UNSC decision

MOLO, KENYA: A day after the UN Security Council rejected Kenya’s bid to defer ICC cases, President Uhuru Kenyatta has been advised to ignore his case at the International criminal court set to begin next year.

Legislators Jacob Macharia and Joseph Kiuna from Molo and Njoro constituencies have urged the president and his deputy William Ruto not to cooperate with The Hague based court.

The two MPs were speaking at the burial of Daniel Njogu who was the Njoro CDF chairman in Piave in Njoro constituency.

“We don’t want our president to go the ICC. The UN security council has refused to defer the cases,” Macharia told the mourners.

Macharia called for unity in the Jubilee government noting that the ICC cases are causing division and blame game between jubilee legislators.

Kiuna echoed these sentiments and noted that Kenyans overwhelming voted for Uhuru and Ruto despite the cases at the ICC.

“We have confidence in our leaders and they should be allowed to travel freely to bring investors into the country without interferences,” he said.

He noted that the move by the UN Security Council was wake-up call for African nations to reconsider the relations with the international community.

“We Africans should ask ourselves who are our friends. Some are pretending yet they continue to exploit us,” he said.

Kiuna, however, encouraged the mourners to embrace development and peace in the area and work closely with the provincial administration.

“Those who want to divide us along tribal and religious lines are the enemies of peace and development,” he said.

Kiuna praised Njogu for his contribution to development in Njoro and Molo constituencies.

Area OCPD Charles Owino told mourners to embrace ‘Nyumba Kumi’ initiative to improve security and help security agencies eliminate illegal brews in the area.
